Technology getting precise and now with the broadcast in every possible field! ABS, Antilock Braking System is featuring its safety now in every wheeled machine on roads. As ABS is now counted as a specification in motorcycles in India, It was genuine to through some light on the subject.
ABS is a security concern technique which was firstly introduced in 1929 for aircrafts. Getting popular, it took no time to enter automobile segment in 1970’s. ABS got popular in India when some powered vehicles were featuring it as a standard or as optional equipment. And now people want to see every motorcycle around with another counted standard as ABS. Actually, ABS was introduced in motorcycles by BMW in 1981. And then other manufacturers used the concept.
How ABS Works:
Anti-lock Braking System or ABS is a technology which is an integration of computerised sensors which help the equipment to determine as when the wheel will get locked up. It works as a Control Unit for the system which guides brakes to release and then re-apply braking pressure numerous times in a second which is not observable to rider as rider continues engaging it uniformly. In simple words, ABS helps to avoid skidding of tyres and as we know skidding tyres have less friction than rolling ones.
What Is The Use Of ABS:
In a naive way, the use of ABS can be understood with the below example;
Just suppose you are riding your motorcycle with a brisk speed. Suddenly some hurdle strikes your eye and you need to get hold of your bike in seconds. Usually good riders keep on pumping the brake to stop safely. But that doesn’t always work as you have to concentrate a lot on brakes. And another way is to brake all at once and keep them engaged. This often skids tyres due to locking of wheels and results in an accident. When you have an ABS enabled motorcycle, just engage the brakes hard and don’t worry about tyre skid. It will automatically pump the brake within the system and you land safe.
Still many riders can argue that they can control their bike more precise and safe without having ABS equipped motorcycle. That is also somewhat true when the rider is enough experienced and knows well about the engagement of front and rear brakes together. Still manual efforts can lag back when the roads under our wheels are muddy or slippery.
There have been performed many experiments in regard of comparisons between ABS enabled motorcycle and ones lacking the feature. BMW amongst all manufacturers has done most of the work over this technology.
There is a unit in USA, IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), which works over security of motor vehicles on roads. Past few days, there was organized a meeting by IIHS which concluded in a verdict that ABS will be made compulsory in motorcycles as motorcycles have risk of accidents.
Press Release Report On IIHS:
“Recent research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety strongly demonstrates the benefits of antilock brakes for motorcycles. Based on findings that antilocks significantly reduce motorcycle crashes, including fatal ones by more than a third, the Institute is seeking a federal requirement that manufacturers equip all new motorcycles with this technology.
“‘The best motorcycle crash is one that never happens,’ says Institute president Adrian Lund.’Traveling on two wheels instead of four is always riskier, but our new research shows that antilock brake technology can make motorcycle riding a much safer way to get around”.”
